Crooked Made Straight

Listen, ya’ll. If there is one thing in life that I am not good at, it is anything that involves a number. I cannot compute numbers in my head. If a recipe calls for a cup and a half of something, I may or may not have to stare at the measuring cups to try and figure out which combination gets me there. And, heaven forbid, I try to measure anything with a ruler or tape measure. My numbers will surely not add up, and my lines will surely be crooked.

I guess that is why I chuckle every time I read the vision of the plumb line in Amos 7. God gives the prophet three visions about Israel. Let’s recap. God shows Amos a swarm of locusts ready to destroy the crops. This would bring famine and economic devastation to the nation. Amos intercedes, and God shows mercy. The second vision shows a consuming fire that devours the land, an even greater judgment than the first. Again, Amos intercedes, and God shows mercy. The third vision, however, shifts from warning to evaluation. The Lord stands beside a wall with a plumb line, measuring whether it is straight. The wall, Israel’s life and worship, has become crooked.

The first two visions show what God could do, a warning of such. The third vision shows God’s desire to call His people back so their lives once again line up with His righteousness.

God’s plumb line reveals truth, and often that truth is that what we thought was straight in our lives is actually a little bent or uneven.

I’ve had seasons in my life where I thought my life was straight only to realize that I was a little off. A decision, an attitude, the direction I was heading, or maybe a perspective. From my view everything looked fine, but when I placed my life against the truth of Christ, something was out of alignment. And that’s exactly the picture we see here in Amos.

So what does the plumb line mean in our lives today? First, God’s plumb line exposes what’s straight and what’s off, not to condemn but to help us realign with Christ. Sometimes when we see our crookedness, we feel guilt or shame, but, friends, that’s really not the point. God wants to correct not crush and to help us build lives that are stable, strong, and upright.

Second, small misalignments matter. Even small bends or uneven spots can cause problems over time. In life, a small attitude problem, an unresolved grudge, or a poor decision may seem minor, but over time it affects our relationships, our witness, and our walk with God. God’s plumb line shows that nothing is too small to fix. He cares about every detail.

God’s standard is perfect. Unlike my measurements, God’s plumb line is perfect every time. We can’t fudge it, ignore it, or argue with it. We can draw ourselves near to Christ and allow the crookedness to be made straight.

Ask yourself along with me: Are my priorities aligned with God’s will? Is my heart aligned with His truth? Am I living straight according to His standard?

The same God who measured Israel is the same God who measures your heart today. Invite Him to straighten what’s bent, level what’s uneven, and guide your steps so that your life stands firm and true. Let His truth be the standard that shapes your choices, your attitudes, and your thoughts.
