As 2025 draws to a close, I’ve found myself slowing down and reflecting on the year—on what it held, what it required, and what it revealed.
You know, there are seasons of life when strategy fails, strength runs out, and certainty disappears. Seasons when what once felt confident suddenly feels fragile.
That is exactly where we find the people of God in 2 Kings chapter 3. Three kings set out for battle. They choose a route through the wilderness, confident in their plan, but seven days into the journey they face a terrifying reality:
There is no water.
No water for the armies.
No water for the animals.
No margin left.
What began as confidence turns into desperation.
That’s when one of the most important questions in the chapter is asked:
“Is there no prophet of the LORD here, through whom we may inquire of the LORD?” 2 Kings 3:11
This moment matters. They don’t ask for a new strategy. They don’t ask for reinforcements. They don’t ask how to get out of the valley.
They ask for the one who has heard from the Lord. They ask for a word.
(Sweet chili…)
Because when our resources dry up, what we need most is not relief but revelation. A word from God changes how we see the valley, how we walk through it, and how we prepare for what’s coming next.
So, Elisha is brought forward, and the word of the Lord comes:
“Thus says the LORD, ‘Make this valley full of ditches.’” 2 Kings 3:16
It is a strange command. No rain is falling. No wind is blowing. No clouds are forming. Yet God tells them to dig anyway.
This is the heart of what 2025 has been for me and maybe you too… a year of digging.
A year where God asked His people to prepare without proof. To obey without evidence. To make room for something they could not yet see. When you are tired, keep digging. When it doesn’t make sense, keep digging. When it feels like the cycle will never end, keep digging.
Digging ditches in a dry valley looks foolish to the natural eye. It is repetitive, exhausting, and costly. And quite frankly, it is painful. And yet, the promise follows the instruction:
“You shall not see wind or rain, but that valley shall be filled with water.” 2 Kings 3:17
See, the miracle was not in the digging. The miracle was in the filling. But the filling only came because the people obeyed first.
Looking back, the year of digging may not have looked glorious. It may have looked like hidden obedience. I mean obedience that others don’t understand, that brings ridicule, and batters your heart and mind.
This digging may be a slow progress, unanswered prayers, or faithfulness without applause. It may have felt like digging while tired, disappointed, or unsure if anything would ever even change.
But Heaven was watching every shovel strike the ground!!
(Just one more time, for the people in the back… sweet chili.)
Friends, if this has been your year of digging, do not despise it. You weren’t wasting time. You were preparing ground. And just as God promised then, He is faithful now.
You may not see the rain.
You may not hear the wind.
But the water is coming. The miracle is on the horizon. Just keep digging the ditch…
