Just a Piece of Curvy Toilet Paper

A couple of weeks ago, I shared a personal story with some of our church kids. Let me give you the quick details…

I was at a friend’s house for Bible study when I got a phone call that my dad was being taken to the emergency room where he passed away. As I hugged someone later that afternoon, I completely broke down—and the strangest thought popped into my mind. Earlier that day, I had used the restroom at my friend’s house, and she had curvy toilet paper. Now, I am aware that curvy toilet paper is not that special and likely strange to talk about, but in that moment, that’s what came out of my mouth; “did you know there is curvy toilet paper?”

Our thoughts and emotions are like that; hard, unexpected, and sometimes confusing, strange or weird. While our emotions are not always accurate, they are real. And in the middle of all of our big emotions, Christ is present. He is faithful. He gently reminds us of what is true, even when our hearts are unsure.

Several of the kids told me afterward that they have curvy toilet paper at their house, and we laughed together. This past Sunday, one of them brought me a piece of their curvy toilet paper. It may seem funny or even silly to some, but to me, it was holy.

It was a reminder that children are special and what a gift it is to be able to point them to a God who delights in us even in the middle of our emotions. And it is a reminder that God often meets us in simple, unexpected moments of life. Even in grief, even in confusion, even in the ordinary, Jesus is near.

So in your moments of heartbreak, confusion, or struggle, I pray the Lord meets you right where you are, and gives you your own piece of curvy toilet paper. A simple reminder that he is here, attentive, and faithful.

Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commandments. Deut. 7:9
