For the Good

Romans 8:28: And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Life often takes unexpected turns. Some moments bring joy and blessing, while others bring pain and uncertainty. In difficult seasons, we may wonder, How can any good come from this? Yet Romans 8:28 reminds us of a powerful truth—God is at work in all things, weaving them together for good.

Notice that this verse doesn’t say all things are good. Some things are undeniably painful—loss, disappointment, failure, betrayal, even spiritual warfare. But God, in His sovereignty, takes the hardest circumstances and uses them for a greater purpose. Nothing is wasted in His hands.

The key to this promise is who it applies to: those who love God and are called according to His purpose. When we walk with Him, even our darkest moments become part of a beautiful story of redemption.

Our situations may feel messy, broken, and uncertain. But take heart—God is not finished yet. His ways are higher than ours, and in time, He will reveal how He has been working all along.

It reminds me of Joseph throughout Genesis. Betrayed by his brothers, sold into slavery, falsely accused, and imprisoned—his life seemed like a series of unfair setbacks. It was like he got through one negative hurdle, and then there was another… a steady cycle.

Yet, in the end, he says this in Genesis 50:20: You intended to harm me, but God intended it all for good. He brought me to this position so I could save the lives of many people.

God used every trial and negative intent to position Joseph for something greater.  Over and over, one thing after another, Joseph was knocked down. But God really was orchestrating His perfect plan.

God used Joseph’s struggle to save many lives according to this scripture, and his struggle continues to encourage and strengthen believers today.

That’s because Joseph’s struggle was never just about him— it was about his obedience.

Joseph’s journey reminds us that God’s purposes go beyond what we can see, and sometimes it’s our pain that allows others to see Christ’s faithfulness.

For those of us who love God, our pain is not pointless. Our waiting is not wasted. Our struggles are not unseen.  God really is weaving something beautiful even when we can’t see… even when all we see is the yuck. In time, we’ll see how Christ has been working.

The hard reality of this truth is that while we know God is loving, sovereign, and faithful, there are times when it doesn’t feel like He is.  Thankfully, while real and valid, we cannot trust our emotions.

Brokenness, negativity, difficult moments… that’s never the end of the story for believers—it’s where God’s power, anointing, and intimacy with Him grows deeper if we choose to believe that.  Beauty really is birthed through ashes.

We can trust Him. His hand is not too short to reach us in our moments of need even when our needs seem to be so frequent.  He works all things for our good and His glory.
