Are you feeling a little overwhelmed? Maybe surrounded by challenges and weighed down by the voices telling you that things will never change? Or, maybe it’s the struggle of motherhood, the ache of a prodigal child, the loneliness in your marriage, or the relentless demands of daily life. I mean, let’s be honest here, there’s always something, and the battle can often feel so unending.
David, in Psalm 3, I think best describes these times for me.
1 O Lord, how many are my foes!
Many are rising against me;
2 many are saying of my soul,
“There is no salvation for him in God.”
David wrote this psalm when he was fleeing from his own son. His enemies were many. They mocked his faith. In other words, from the words of a fellow sister in Christ, it was a “whole thing” for David. And you know what? I can relate; sometimes life is just a whole thing.
The best part of this chapter, however, is not David’s transparency of his struggle. Let’s keep reading.
3 But you, O Lord, are a shield about me,
my glory, and the lifter of my head.
4 I cried aloud to the Lord,
and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah.
What a testimony of God’s goodness! Instead of giving in to despair, David turned his eyes to the Father.
Oh dear friend, what an example for us. God is our shield. He stands between us and the battles that rage around us.
And that is not all! When the battles become heavy and our chin begins to slump, He is the lifter of our head! He postures our face to Him reminding us so gently that we are His.
David’s journey through this Psalm continues.
5 I lay down and slept;
I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
Rest… in the storm, in the uncertainty, when answers are not present. David did not find rest, because his circumstances had changed. He found rest for his soul, because He understood that the Lord would sustain Him through it all.
Cry out to Him, friends. Trust that His shield is in place, and His hand reaches to you. Rest in the truth that He is the sustainer of our souls.
