“They have taken God out of schools.”

I have heard this statement more times than I have fingers and toes. While there is a “separation of church and state,” the idea that God is not in our schools could not be farther from the truth. Not only are their Godly men and women on the front lines in our classrooms, but there are a whole lot of children carrying the light of Christ with them everyday. Separation of church and state actually protects our kids right to live out their faith everyday. So, where is the balance? How do we empower our kids to reveal their faith to others in their schools? Let’s look at what our kids can and cannot do.

  • Kids have the right to pray silently or quietly before a test, lunch, or anything else. Kids do not have the right to pray out loud whenever they want.
  • Kids have the right to talk about Jesus with other students during their recess or lunch. It is not breaking a school rule to talk about God. Kids do not have the right to talk when their teacher has told them to be quiet.
  • Kids have the right to carry their Bible and read it at school. They can read their Bible at lunch or recess. Kids do not have the right to read the Bible when they are supposed to be doing school work.
  • Kids have the right to use Christian-themed notebooks or school supplies. They can wear religious-themed clothing. They do not have the right to break the school dress code.
  • Kids have the right to start a student-led Christian club. They just have to follow the same rules as any other club. Kids do not have the right to interrupt instruction time to tell others about their club or bully anyone that doesn’t want to attend.

When it comes to shining the light of Jesus and carrying Him with us where ever we go, kids have a lot of rights and a lot of responsibility. When kids can tell others about Jesus and follow the rules, they are becoming a powerful witness for Him. Let’s encourage our kids to be powerful warrior’s in God’s army in their classrooms.
