Faithfully on Watch

This past week, I was reading a story about a little boy born in the middle of a time when Pharaoh was ruling the nation. Pharaoh had ordered for all Hebrew boys to be killed. Moses’ mother, Levi, hid her baby for as long as she could. When the time had come where she could hide him no longer, she laid him in a basket and set his little sailboat into the river. I can only imagine what this time was like for those mamas who had their very breath ripped from their hands! In middle of what seemed like devastation, God had a plan. This baby, Moses, would grow into a man who served the Lord and led His people. I would imagine Levi was full of worry of the unknown but full of hope for what God would do with her baby boy.

The next part of this story catches my heart every time I read it. Take a look.

The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him. Soon Pharaoh’s daughter came down to bathe in the river, and her attendants walked along the riverbank. When the princess saw the basket among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it for her. When the princess opened it, she saw the baby. The little boy was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This must be one of the Hebrew children,” she said. Then the baby’s sister approached the princess. “Should I go and find one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?” she asked. “Yes, do!” the princess replied. So the girl went and called the baby’s mother. Exodus 2:4-8

Moses’ sister, Miriam, in true big sister fashion, stuck around to see just what would happen to her baby brother. God used Miriam that day to bring a divine connection between Pharaoh’s daughter and Moses’ mother. God’s plan pulled together two ladies from two different worlds to raise up a prophet, a devoted servant of the Lord.

There are a few things that capture my attention for us today… for us with children or grandchildren, for us that serve children, for us that encounter children in whatever capacity. First, God has a special plan for each child, and you are a part of His divine plan for each child’s life. Second, you may feel like you are “watching from the distance” like Miriam was. You may even feel like you are in the “background” because you are not in a spotlight position. But God is working through your life at all times. He does some of His most powerful work behind the scenes! And, lastly, you never know who you are watching over. The child may be another Moses who changes the world for Christ.

Let us continue to faithfully watch over the little ones in our lives and trust God to use each moment for His kingdom!
