If your family is like mine, you can find yourself on “Go Mode” pretty much all the time. There are ball practices, buzzing of phones, school work, church events, and the list just continues. Somewhere along the way, we have forgotten how to slow down. We’ve lost the art of finding rest and quiet.
If I’m completely honest, quiet moments are pretty scarce in our house. I mean, let’s be real here, I have two (almost) teenage boys. If it’s quiet, I’m concerned. But the noise in our lives, do not just come from our children. Voices of all sorts yell at us from social media, the news, emails, texts, the TV, and even our calendars. I saw a quote not too long ago that said, “Make time for the quiet moments, because God whispers and the world is loud.” Oh, how I long to hear the whispers of God and for my children and your children to hear too!
So here’s a fun challenge, take some time to settle with your family. Be intentional about setting limits on your devices and your kids’. Maybe use this month to have a 24-hour screen free time from Saturday sundown to Sunday sundown. Or, maybe no screens during dinnertime or bedtime. Those are wonderful times for discipleship conversations that can easily be swept away with distractions. Take some time to turn off some of the noise. Let’s settle our hearts together and find the beauty of being still. Not just for us but for those who are watching.
